Proud of British Beer

I’m all for championing British brewers and those at the other end of the chain who sell it to me. So the release of the SIBA Proud of British Beer film was something that piqued my interest. The 5 minute film I assume is to act as a rallying call for support of producers, suppliers and retailers. Great you might think? Well not quite. The idea I support. The execution I find lacking. Taking the much copied Greg Koch template of I am a Craft Brewer falls flat. I enjoyed the original. It’s what our American cousins do well. I enjoyed I am a Craft Beer Drinker homage. By the time I got to the I am a… Homebrewer, Canadian Craft Brewer, Ontario Craft Brewer it was getting old and this was 8 months ago! So it’s a shame that a nation known the world over for innovation couldn’t come up with something original, that didn’t rely on stiff collars, upper lips and even stiffer dialouge. I don’t want to see a re-hash of something that’s been copied to the point of parody. I’m just thankful that the budget didn’t allow them to shoe horn a couple of Sptifires in for good measure. Anyway, see what you think…

Perhaps you think it’s spot on and I’m off the mark? It will doubtless appeal to some but wouldn’t an original offering actually have been more effective, interesting and relevant?

  1. What a shame you missed the point. It does not look like a rehash in any way. The message is different and relevant to the UK. Did you know 40% of all beer duty collected in the EU (27 countries) is collected in the UK! I heard that from a CAMRA guy last night. If that does not make you cry then nothing will. A very worthy film that gets its message across.

    • What a shame you didn’t read my comment; where I refer to championing a cause and it being a rallying call. I understand the points. I agree with the points.

I just see it as a rehash of style and content. This may reach 1000s when with some originality it could be much much more. Worthy yes. Ability to go viral and reach a wider audience than beer obsessives, probably not.

And no it doesn’t make me cry… I’m obviously a lost cause.

  2. It may be a rehash to you – but 99.99 per cent of the people who see it will not have seen the “I am a craft brewer” video or any of those that followed it. So to almost everybody else it will be fresh.

  3. I agree wholeheartedly with you on this one – the aims and message are laudable but the tone is not pitched right at all. The issue of originality vs the American ad is a valid one – and it is a bit galling to think we couldn’t have come up with something different.

But equally, those who have never seen that video will find the music (Holst’s Jupiter – though this segment is better known as the by-jingo ‘I vow to thee my country’) – and I hesitate to say this – laughable. Reminiscent of a UKIP ad. Or, worse, so hackneyed a style (think of 80s political broadcasts from all parties) that it has, as a style, already been parodied so many times: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T72TopWbXJg

As I said on Pete Brown’s blog, it may well appeal to some Tory MPs – I’m looking at you Andrew Rosindell MP http://www.life.com/image/72204538 – but these kind of videos really only gain traction if they go viral. Who makes videos go viral? Generally the liberal-left tech crowd and the young. And neither demographic is really given a nod or a wink in this.

And those who say criticisms of this video are hurting the cause should comfort themselves that fellow beer bloggers/geeks are the only ones reading stuff on these sites (which, as far as I can gather, is the only fathomable reason the vast majority have been excited by what I regarded as a clumsily executed piece of work, however correctly intentioned).
